IKS Privacy Policy V1.0This privacy policy is for the Interactive Knowledge Stack project (IKS) websites and services (Websites*), including <http://iks-project.eu>, <http://interactive-knowledge.org>, <http://lists.iks-project.eu>, <http://wiki.iks-project.eu> and <http://code.google.com/p/iks-project/> . The Websites are maintained by Salzburg Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH (Salzburg Research) on behalf of IKS.
Except as described below, Salzburg Research does not collect (or require visitors to the Websites to give) personally-identifying information such as names, email addresses, and phone numbers. Like most web site operators, Salzburg Research collects non-personally-identifying information of the sort that web browsers and servers typically make available, such as the browser type, language preference, referring site, and date and time of each visitor request.
Otherwise, Salzburg Research will not publicly release potentially-personally-identifying information except under the same circumstances as Salzburg Research releases personally-identifying information. Those circumstances are explained below.
Visitors may interact with the Websites in ways that disclose additional information about them. The amount and type of information that visitors disclose depends on the nature of the interaction. For example, visitors who wish to post content to certain portions of the Websites or participate in live chat session(s) are asked to provide usernames that identify that content as having been posted by a particular account. People who contribute code, by comparison, are asked to provide contact information, up to and sometimes including telephone or fax numbers, so that they can be contacted as necessary. In each case, Salzburg Research collects personally-identifying information only as needed to fulfill the purpose of a person's interaction with the Websites or with IKS. IKS is an open project that shares as much information as possible about its products, its operations and its associations. Accordingly, Website visitors should assume - as should most people who interact with IKS - that any personally-identifying information provided to Salzburg Research in relation to IKS will be made available to the public. There are three broad exceptions to that rule:
Outside those three contexts, people should assume that personally-identifying information provided through the Websites will be made available to the public.
Where Salzburg Research has collected personally-identifying information subject to one of the three exceptions described in the Website Users section, above, it discloses that information only to those of its employees, contractors, service providers, and subsidiaries and related organizations that need to know that information in order to process it on Salzburg Research's behalf and that have agreed not to disclose the information to others. Some of those employees, contractors, service providers, subsidiaries and related organizations may be located outside of your home country; by using Salzburg Research's Websites, you consent to the transfer of your information to them. Salzburg Research does not rent or sell such information to anyone. Other than to its employees, contractors, service providers, and subsidiaries and related organizations, as described above, Salzburg Research discloses such information only when required to do so by law, or when Salzburg Research believes in good faith that disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect the property or rights of Salzburg Research, IKS project participants, or the public at large. Salzburg Research takes all measures reasonably necessary to protect against the unauthorized access, use, alteration or destruction of such information. Updating Personally-Identifying Information On Websites that provide user accounts Salzburg Research permits users to freely update and correct their personally-identifying information stored on the Website. To do so, users should look for links or contact information available on whichever Salzburg Research Websites store the relevant information or contact Salzburg Research by using the email address listed below. Some information already published on the Websites (such as, for example, email messages stored in a public archive) cannot be updated by website users and will not be updated by Salzburg Research. Exceptions to this policy may be made in special circumstances.
What Are Cookies? A cookie is a string of information that a web site stores on a visitor's computer, and that the visitor's browser provides to the web site each time the visitor returns. Most major web sites use cookies. Because the browser provides this cookie information to the Web site at each visit, cookies serve as a sort of label that allows a Web site to "recognize" a browser when it returns to the site. The domain name in Website cookies will clearly identify their affiliation with IKS and, where applicable, its third-party service provider. What Are Clear GIFs? How The Websites Use Cookies and Clear GIFs? The Websites use cookies and may use clear gifs to help Salzburg Research identify and track visitors, their usage of the Websites, and their access preferences across multiple requests and visits to Websites. The Websites currently do not utilize clear gifs but may use clear gifs in the future. The basic idea is to gather aggregate data about how people use the Salzburg Research Web sites. The term usually used to describe this is "web analytics" and the cookies and clear gifs are the tools by which a web site owner collects this web analytics data. Salzburg Research will use the web analytics data only to determine aggregate usage patterns for our Web sites as described above. If third-party service providers are used to analyze web analytics data, then the third-party service providers must not share this information with others or use the information for purposes other than to maintain the services they provide to Salzburg Research. It is possible to link cookies and clear gifs to personally-identifying information, thereby permitting Website operators, including our third-party analytics providers, to track the online movements of particular individuals. Salzburg Research does not do so for the *Websites* and its third-party service providers are not allowed to correlate Website data with any other data. Salzburg Research uses the information provided by cookies and clear gifs to develop a better understanding of how the Websites' visitors the Websites, and to facilitate those visitors' interactions with the Websites. Salzburg Research may make the aggregate data obtained from web analytics (including from our third-party analytics providers, if applicable) publicly available. If this data is made available, none of the information will be personally-identifying information or potentially-personally-identifying information. How to Control the Use of Cookies? You have the ability to accept or decline cookies. Website visitors who do not wish to have cookies placed on their computers by Salzburg Research, its contractors, or third-party service providers should set their browsers to refuse cookies. Certain features of the Websites may not function properly without the aid of cookies.
Salzburg Research may change this privacy policy from time to time. Any and all changes will be reflected on this page. Substantive changes will also be announced through the standard mechanisms through which Salzburg Research communicates with the IKS community, including the IKS "iks-community" mailing list. For details on the list, see: <http://lists.iks-project.eu/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/iks-community>
